The Friends of St John the Baptist Church
In Aberdare we are very proud of our Parish Church. Built in circa 1189 AD it is a wonderful building that has been the centre of town life for almost 900 years.
It is stated in a small volume entitled " The Parish Church " that our most precious inheritance is our poetry and our Parish Churches. They are, the author says, our unique possessions, our peculiar treasures, and no one can take a just pride in his race and country who has not learned to appreciate and love them.
In St. John's Church we have such a treasure—the oldest building and (in its vestry) the oldest Day School in the Cynon Valley.
The aim of this website is inform and to foster appreciation and love for our beautiful church.
The knowledge that there are still hosts of people in Aberdare who do not realise what a little gem it is that nestles so snugly in its oasis of chestnut and elm trees, appears to call for a concerted effort to enlighten and stir their interest.
In about 1946 the Friends of St John’s was formed with the aim of maintaining the fabric of the building, we have been instrumental in keeping the building in the healthy state it is today, but like all organizations we are always looking for new members so I hope this website will whet your interest and encourage people take a new fresh look at the wonderful historic building in their midst.
